It’s an understatement to say that mid-century modern has had a huge comeback! When we look in magazines, on pinterest, in homeware stores and especially on tv renovation shows nowadays we see many spaces styled with mid-century modern furniture and pieces.
This style stemmed around the time after the Second World War, from the mid 1940’s to the late 1960’s. Designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson and Harry Bertoia created iconic furniture and lighting that are easily recognizable even today, which really reflects this style. This post touches on the basis of what mid-century modern style is and why its so popular and how to achieve the perfect blend in your home.
Characteristics of Mid-Century Modern Design
- Forms are organic and geometric
Natural materials like wood, metal and leather were high in demand when this style flourished. Furniture ties in the organic shapes with geometric lines and legs and features. Lines are minimal and clean and changed from elaborate features to more of a modern feel.
- New Materials shaped New Designs
Bent plywood, fiberglass, foam, alluminum, steel and plastic laminates were all malleable and designers used this to celebrate the materials and what shapes and styles they could make.
- All colours can be used with Mid-Century Modern furniture, such as the bold and bright colours that were used when the style first came into fashion, or neutrals that really bring out the form and clean lines of the style
